# Orthopaedics national research, 2027 application season

## Coverage and results

Public snapshot collected September 15, 2026 Central time (September 16 UTC). The [NRMP program directory](https://programdirectory.nrmp.org/) contains 206 unique active categorical Orthopaedic ACGME programs and 224 tracks in this snapshot. All 206 have a research row. Public FREIDA returned resident percentages for 200; six remain unknown, not zero.

Using the working source hierarchy below, 49 programs meet the requested Ortho threshold of at least 10% DO residents. Of those, 44 have at least one documented nearby OB/GYN partner meeting its at least 20% threshold. The other 162 remain in the review pool. These counts describe the bundled public catalog, not a guarantee of eligibility or completeness of individual admissions policies. Saved local OB records and deletion choices can affect displayed overlap.

The research pool is deliberately broader than the [30 Orthopaedic signals for the 2027 MyERAS season](https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-residencies-eras/program-signaling-2027-myeras-application-season). No signals or applications are submitted by this view.

## Evidence hierarchy and differences

1. Reviewed public roster observations, with numerator, denominator and limitations.
2. Usable existing [CORD / ORIN](https://orin.aoassn.org/#/search) DO and total resident counts, with profile-updated and checked dates.
3. Fresh exact-program [FREIDA](https://freida.ama-assn.org/) three-year resident averages.

Previously collected ORIN evidence is retained, not represented as a fresh reread of every profile in this release. Old profile dates and unknown cohort years remain visible. The resulting primary sources are 78 ORIN, 127 FREIDA and one public roster record. Missing FREIDA values do not erase usable ORIN evidence. Different populations are not averaged, and a higher percentage is not selected merely because it passes the cutoff.

Five programs differ across the 10% cutoff:

| Program | ACGME | Working source | Fresh FREIDA |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| UCSF Fresno | 2600513217 | ORIN 5% | 15.8% |
| Missouri Columbia | 2602821148 | ORIN 4% | 20% |
| Cleveland Clinic Akron General | 2603821058 | ORIN 6.3% | 12.5% |
| Geisinger Wilkes-Barre | 2604100217 | ORIN 10% | 6.2% |
| Medical City Denton | 2604800001 | Public roster 2/15, about 13.3% | 8.3% |

Each is flagged in the UI and available through the source-disagreement filter. Passing the working screen with a flagged source is a research candidate, not a resolved discrepancy.

## Couples overlap

The same canonical matching function used by General Surgery evaluates every saved/catalog OB partner, deduplicates identities, and displays named programs, sourced DO shares and approximate miles. Its same-city or 70-mile area-distance screen is not a hospital-to-hospital driving commute. Rotation sites can be far from the primary city.

Denton has four qualifying partners in the bundled catalog: Medical City Arlington (55%), Methodist Dallas (41.7%), John Peter Smith (22.2%) and Baylor All Saints (29.2%). Below-cutoff and unknown nearby partners remain inspectable. UCSF Health-St Marys Hospital-CA lacks an unambiguous offline location point; no distance is invented. A missing qualifying partner is described as incomplete documented evidence, not proof that no program exists.

## Exam and training review

Eight focused public reviews are linked directly from the rows and saved-program details: Denton, Broward, Larkin, McLaren Macomb, Corewell Farmington Hills/Dearborn, KCU/HCA Research, Oklahoma State Tulsa and Stockton. Exact sources and caveats live in `ortho-exam-reviews.js`.

Important distinctions: Broward's numerical policy is dated 2016; OSU's first-attempt COMLEX language concerns audition documentation; Research Medical Center's FAQ contains obsolete examination references; Stockton's public FREIDA profile lists both COMLEX and USMLE requirements for DO interviews. These do not establish an unpublished exception or universal current selection rule. All other programs explicitly remain requirements-not-reviewed. DO representation alone cannot clear exam attempts, score deadlines or eligibility.

## Reproducibility and preservation

`scripts/build-ortho-surveys.cjs` collects only public NRMP/FREIDA pages, checks exact ACGME identity, preserves suppression/missing values, and stops on access-denial or rate-limit responses. It emits a reviewable patch. `ortho-public-surveys.js` retains source URLs, source update dates and collection metadata.

The research view is derived and read-only. The saved Ortho plan and its controls remain below it. Existing notes, applications, interest, signal choices, rank pairs and cloud records are not migrated or overwritten. The 219 saved Ortho rows may include legacy identities and are not the same denominator as 206 unique active national research programs. General Surgery remains the initial tab. No private applicant history or authenticated Residency Explorer export is included. Cloud sync remains a separate unresolved issue.
